Welcome To Old College

Old College is one of the oldest and most famous of all the University Colleges in The City. It has been standing for almost six hundred years and has seen some of the brightest and boldest characters in history pass through its illustrious courtyards.

Founded in Medieval times by a mysterious secret organisation, Old College has provided world-class education throughout the centuries. The two halves of the College are divided by The River, over which stretches the ancient and celebrated Bridge, where the footfalls of generations of students and Fellows alike still echo across the waters.

Old College is currently under the watchful eye of The Master, who leads The Fellowship and servants in constantly striving to maintain the high standards that have forever been associated with this prestigious seat of learning.

I am the Deputy Head Porter. Here in The Porters’ Lodge, my Porters and I oversee the comings and goings, the ups and downs and the ins and outs of everything and everyone at Old College. As the first female to hold the title in the entire history of Old College, I have a lot to prove to a lot of people. And none more so than our brave and fearless leader, Head Porter.

Welcome to Old College. Come in, take a look around, make yourself at home. And if anyone can work out what on earth is going on here, please do let me know…

Old College is a fictional College and the characters and events are a product of my fertile imagination

    1. Degrees in everything from the sublime to the ridiculous and everything in between. As for career prospects – for non-academic like myself, there is plenty of work for dogsbodies with a good line in random adventures and tackling the unlikely ;)

  1. Hello, just a dumb Yank here, but in the States a porter is one who sweeps the floor or handles your baggage at the airport. Sounds like over there the position is more akin to campus security or possibly mobile campus information personnel.

    1. Hello there! Porters in every other circumstance are exactly as you describe, even in other ‘ordinary’ universities. But at the colleges of Oxford and Cambridge Universities, they are something else entirely. Officially, they are ‘The Keepers Of The Keys’ but the role is as wide ranging as you could imagine. And it’s nothing to do with being a Yank – most British people have no idea about College Porters either. Thanks for stopping by!

    1. We look forward to your visits also! Ridiculous degrees a speciality, as well as ridiculous outfits and general all round strangeness. Welcome to Old College!

  2. Congratulations! I see you all the time in the Professor’s comments. I will do my best to follow, but these days I am hit and miss with WP — lots of life interference with fun! :)

  3. Loved the book and am now a new fan of PorterGirl. Very much enjoying rummaging through these blogs to find new parts of the story with a sturdy cup of tea in hand. Well done!

    1. You have made my day, Avamary – thank you! A sturdy cup of tea is a must for any occasion. Please do rummage at your leisure and feel free to ask any questions that come to mind (lots of College-y stuff makes no sense whatsoever ;) )

  4. Hey, miss Portergirl. Just wanted to stop by , drop you a note saying thank you for all the attention that you lavish at my lil spot on the web! Also, I did the Tenacious D song after a comment you left on a post that I obliterated. Always good to have a sense of humor! take care!

    1. Hey Ted! I really enjoy both your music and your artwork. Tenacious D are one of my very favourites and I was delighted to hear your cover! I thought you did a fabulous job. Pop a link in here, if you like – I highly recommend that everyone has a listen!
